Optimize Resources with PCM's Water Management

Produced water management — the water brought to the surface during oil and gas production — is key in the oil and gas industry. This industry consumes and produces large amounts of water during oil and gas extraction. On average, about 7 to 10 barrels of water are produced for every barrel of crude oil.

To achieve maximum oil recovery, water is often injected into the reservoirs or into disposal wells. Onshore or offshore, produced water must be treated to be recycled for subsurface injection or rejected with regulatory guidelines to permit land applications or discharge and offsite trucking.

PCM’s progressing cavity pump (PCP) solutions offer an effective approach to transferring and processing produced water with minimal shear and maximum efficiency. With their unique design, PCPs deliver smooth, non-pulsating flow. This significantly enhances the performance of separation processes and minimizes chemical treatment requirements.

Challenges in Produced Water Management

Cost-effective solutions

As hydrocarbon extraction becomes more complex and environmentally regulated, the handling of produced water must be efficient, safe, and reliable

PCM pumps are built to operate safely and efficiently under the most demanding regulatory conditions. They ensure cost-effective solutions, through the process.

Corrosion resistant pumping system

Produced water typically contains chlorides, sulfates, hydrocarbons, and dissolved gases that create a highly corrosive environment. PCM offers pumps constructed from corrosion-resistant materials, including high-grade duplex stainless steels, to ensure durability and uptime even when handling aggressive fluids.

Low shear pumping solutions

Oil and water mixtures are prone to emulsification during pumping. With their unique PCP conveying principle, PCM surface transfer pumps offer low-shear pumping.

It ensures maximum separator performance by maintaining oil droplet size. This reduces dependency on expensive chemicals and improves overall efficiency of the produced water treatment process, as centrifugal pumps would induce formation of emulsions.

Rejected water

When reinjection is not feasible, produced water must be discharged according to strict environmental guidelines or transported offsite. In such scenarios, PCM pumps can transfer water to treatment facilities, disposal wells, or holding tanks with:

  • High flow
  • Excellent resistance to wear and corrosion
  • Easy integration into automated control systems
  • Cost-efficient solution

Offshore platforms, in particular, benefit from PCM’s vertical pump configurations which can be mounted inside caissons, sumps, or tanks to save valuable topside space and weight.

FAQ - Produced Water Management

Can PCM pumps handle high salinity and corrosive fluids?

Yes. PCM offers a full range of materials including high-alloy steels and elastomers compatible with brine, sour gas, and chemically aggressive fluids.

Do PCPs reduce chemical usage in separation systems?

Absolutely. Thanks to low shear operation, PCM pumps help maintain oil droplet size, which improves separation and reduces the need for demulsifiers or coagulants.

Are vertical pump configurations available?

Yes. PCM designs vertical PCPs specifically for offshore or confined installations, allowing efficient use of space and easy sump or caisson mounting.
