Increasing expectations in terms of hygiene 

Animal feed is increasingly subject to rigorous health standards to ensure the safety and quality of products for companion and farm animals. Pumping equipment suitable for food contact (Meet European and US regulations (EC 1935/2004 and FDA)) and with a hygienic design is in increasing demand. Progressive cavity pumps, peristaltic pumps and PCM dosing pumps are ideal for this challenge.

Transfer of viscous or abrasive products 

The production of animal feed involves the handling of products with variable viscosity, ranging from unmatured meat stuffings to co-products such as molasses, vinasse, etc. PCM progressive cavity pumps ensure a constant flow rate regardless of viscosity and discharge pressure, even at low flow rates. Peristaltic pumps allow abrasive liquids or liquids containing solid particles to be transferred without the risk of premature wear.

Typical applications for dry pet food

Subsequently, the extrusion process involves the use of progressive cavity pumps and peristaltic pumps. 

Progressive cavity pumps are used to convey viscous meat and grain-based pastes, while peristaltic pumps can also handle the transfer of liquid oils and coatings applied at the end of the line to improve product appeal.

Wet PetFood

Wet food for animals has special transfer constraints. Raw materials such as minced meat, sauces and broths should be handled with care to preserve their texture and pieces

The manufacture of so-called "wet" products (75 to 78% humidity) requires different types of liquid or viscous raw materials (fresh and/or frozen meats, mineral supplements, phosphoric acid, texturing agents, vitamins and cereals). PCM pumps provide continuous transfer, which avoids shear and product deterioration, and ensures minimal reduction in product loss.

Pork soup 

Animal feed for livestock often includes liquid rations, such as pork soup: a mixture of dry matter and liquids. PCM pumps make it easy to pump these viscous mixtures in a continuous flow. 

PCM pumps meet the constraints of pork soup production : just-in-time process, length of pipes and consequent pressure, avoiding decantation of the soup and ensuring a sufficient feed flow.
