Oil and Gas Processing Solutions

During the Oil & gas processing, oil wells produce a mixture of multitude of hydrocarbons condensates or crudes, associated gas, water and minerals. It implies handling a wide array of complex fluids extracted from the reservoir. It also requires robust, adaptable, and high-performance pumping technologies involved in the different treatment processes to value oil and gas on the market.

PCP pumps are particularly appreciated in separation facilites, skimming installations, slope recoveries and flaring process and gas dehydration to name a few case of use.

Challenges in Oil and Gas Processing

Low NPSH required

Fluids encountered in oil and gas environments often exhibit high vapor pressure or are stored in vessels with low suction head availability. This imposes a serious risk of cavitation, which can cause equipment degradation and process interruptions.

With the lowest NPSH of all positive displacement pumps, the PCM surface transfer pumps deliver highly reliable performance in challenging applications with NPSH required below 0.5 meter (1,6 feet) of water column.

Typical applications facing low NPSH are:  open drain, closed drain, knock-out drum pump, LP/MP/HP scrubber pumps.

Low shear pumping solutions

Oil and water mixtures tend to emulsify when pumped. Thanks to their distinctive Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) technology, PCM surface transfer pumps provide gentle, low-shear fluid handling.

By preserving oil droplet size, they help maintain peak separator efficiency. This minimizes the need for costly chemical additives — unlike centrifugal pumps, which typically promote emulsification.

Viscous and solids liquids

In oil & gas processing, fluid composition changes frequently due to reservoir behavior or production strategy. PCM surface transfer pumps perform constant flow despite varying levels of viscosity, solids content and pressure (Hydrocarbon, water mixed in emulsion or sand.)

Typical applications in the Oil and Gas Processing Solutions

Open and closed drains transfer

In oil & gas processing, PCM pumps ensure the efficient evacuation of fluids collected in emergencies or operational drainage systems, often containing hydrocarbons, water, and chemical residues.

Flare KO drum emptying

Safe and reliable removal of liquids from high-pressure or low-pressure flare knock-out drums. Our pumps manage fluids with high vapor pressures and varying compositions.

Crude oil transfer

PCM pumps handle untreated or partially separated crude oil containing water, sand, or wax, with constant flow and minimal shear.

Hydrocarbon condensate transfer

Hydrocarbon condensate transfer from HP/LP flare knocks out drums or hazardous effluents from a closed drain tank involve fluids with high vapor pressure. PCM pumps’ low NPSH performance is critical in these scenarios, where gravity feed is minimal and space is constrained. These fluids, sourced from multiple lines or equipment drains, must be safely transported back into the main process stream for treatment or recovery. The composition and characteristics of these fluids vary considerably.

Other typical applications

  • Rich MEG (Monoethylene Glycol) and Lean MEG slurry
  • Sludge containing hydrocarbon residues, scale, and corrosion products

FAQ - Oil and Gas Processing

Are PCM PCPs suitable for offshore platforms?

Absolutely. With a compact footprint, vertical mounting capability, and corrosion-resistant designs, PCM pumps are widely used offshore for sludge evacuation, drain transfer, and hazardous fluid management.

How does a PCP manage solids or sand in crude oil?

Progressing cavity pumps are particularly effective with abrasive or solid-laden fluids due to their low internal velocity and large free passage. Proper material selection and speed control help ensure durability and performance.

Is there any risk of shear-sensitive fluid degradation?

No. Unlike centrifugal pumps, PCPs operate with low shear, preserving the integrity of emulsion-sensitive fluids, polymers, or MEG solutions used in hydrate control or EOR processes.
