Experts in Sludge Treatment Pumping Applications

Sludge treatment is a key element in the environmental sector for wastewater treatment plants, whether for industries or municipalities. At PCM, we offer  reliable, efficient and sustainablepumping solutions for every stage of  the sludge management process, whether liquid, thickened or dewatered.

Challenges

Liquid Sludge Management

Liquid sludge, consisting of 0.5% to 5% dry matter, requires reliable and regular transfer  to dewatering systems. The challenge lies in pumping  these abrasive fluids with solid particles such as sand.

Thickened sludge management

During the dewatering process, the sludge becomes more viscous, reaching up to 10% solid content. This change in consistency requires a hopper pump to prevent sedimentation and ensure a constant flow.

Dewatered sludge management

Dewatered sludge is highly viscous (up to 45% solids), which requires robust pumps adapted to extreme conditions for its transfer. A pump with hopper and Archimedes screw is essential to ensure smooth  and clog-free transfer

Process

Liquid Sludge Transfer

The first step is to transfer the abrasive liquid slurries from the primary sedimentation ponds to the dewatering or thickening systems.

Thickened sludge disposal

After the first stage of dewatering, the sludge becomes more viscous and contains up to 10% solids, requiring a suitable pump to prevent sedimentation. This sludge is discharged to drip tables, belt filters, or dynamic thickeners.

Pumping of dewatered sludge

After a second stage of dewatering, the sludge reaches a solids content of up to 45%, requiring resistant equipment to ensure smooth transfer.

Process

Preparation of the concentrated and diluted polymer

Polymers are essential for binding sludge and facilitating its processing. The use of  progressive cavity pumps is ideally suited for transferring the concentrated polymer as well as the dilute polymer in the slurry

Polymer dosing is a crucial step, it must be accurate so that the polymer is diluted perfectly and directly in the fluid, in order to facilitate the treatment of the sludge and its transfer.

Chemical dosing

Chemicals, whether liquid or solid, play a vital role in the sludge treatment process by facilitating its neutralization. Some of the main chemicals used include milk of lime, ferric chloride, sulfuric acid,  and hydrogen peroxide.

FAQ - Sludge treatment

What is the purpose of a slurry pump?

The purpose of a slurry pump is to ensure the transfer of thick fluids loaded with solid particles such as sludge. It allows these materials to be transported efficiently and continuously in various industrial processes, while resisting wear and tear caused by abrasive materials.

What types of slurries can be transferred with PCM pumps?

Our pumps are suitable for  liquid, thickened and dewatered slurries, with specific solutions for each step of the process.

What is the benefit of maintenance in place?

Maintenance in place helps reduce costly production downtime, making it easy  to quickly repair EcoMoineau™ MX PCM pumps without the need to remove the pump from its installation.
